Transportation and Logistics
The Australian Transportation and Logistics industry is facing unprecedented growth opportunities as a result of the increase in online retailing. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics online orders increased 32% in the 2010/2011 financial year, up from $143bn to $189bn, with over half of Australian businesses placing orders via the internet and 28% receiving orders via the internet.
Due to this growth, competition amongst online retailers is increasing and we are seeing more and more free shipping and returns being offered to consumers. For global online stores this poses a challenge – not only because of the associated costs of international shipping but as a result, some of the online heavyweights are considering establishing local fulfilment centres.
Local and regional transportation and logistics businesses are taking advantage of this opportunity by leveraging their existing warehousing and transportation assets to build out their business to consumer (B2C) capabilities. This means investing in customer and consumer focused capabilities and a range of customizable freight pickup and delivery services in order to satisfy the diverse set of consumer delivery requirements.
To be successful, logistics companies will need to develop a thorough understanding of the online and ecommerce environment and develop robust, reliable and cost effective service offerings in order to become preferred shippers for consumers and for eTailers. Shipping experience is closely associated with the online brand and etailers will be selective in their choice of shipping partners.
